Considering Prenatal Massage? The Proof is in the Research.

July 13, 2020 by Alexandra Robin

Are you pregnant and experiencing pelvic or abdominal pain? What about leg pain or headaches? Nausea? Anxiety? Sleeplessness?  Prenatal Massage may be the treatment option you didn’t know you had.

If you have ever found yourself experiencing any of the above symptoms throughout your pregnancy, there are several natural and safe treatment options available. In addition to chiropractic care, prenatal massage therapy is a safe and effective treatment for many of the symptoms that accompany pregnancy, when performed by a massage therapist that is certified in prenatal techniques.

Here are a few studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of prenatal massage. Several were compiled by Tiffany Martini Field, Professor of Pediatrics, Psychology, and Psychiatry at the University of Miami School of Medicine, who has done extensive research since the 1990’s regarding the benefits of massage for expectant mothers and infants. (Click any link below to access the study abstracts.)

2010 Literature review in Expert Reviews In Obstetrics And Gynecology

  • Massage therapy decreased depression, anxiety, and leg pain in pregnant women. Also indicating those in labor used less pain medication and had labors averaging three hours shorter than average.

2009 Study in the Journal Of Bodywork And Movement Therapies

  • On 112 pregnant women diagnosed with depression suggested those receiving psychotherapy plus massage over a six week period experienced greater drops in depression than those getting psychotherapy alone.

2006 Study in Scandinavian Journal Of Caring Science

  • Massage was an effective integrative treatment for severe pregnancy related nausea and vomiting.

1999 Study in Journal Of Obstetrics And Gynecology

  • Benefits of massage therapy during pregnancy confirmed. Findings include massage reducing anxiety, improving mood, sleep, and reducing back pain among expectant mothers who received massage twice weekly for five weeks during pregnancy.
